Andreas Rehfeldt opened the Unicorn Open in 2008 and greeted as a guest of honour the mayoress of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, which to overdo it the patronage of the Unicorn Open volunteered in 2009.

There also was already in the first round surprises where on board 6 FM Ismael Karim/2394 against Christopher Hertwig/2036 lost. To mention especially also the fight strength of Winfried Leimeister/1961, who could hold an endgame rook and knight against rook against Frank Niehaus/2206 more than 50 moves of the draw.

Reinhard Baier could protect himself in the 3rd round itself with FM Ulrich Schwekendiek/2285 also immediately still the second FM-scalp.
